Gestational surrogacy is an arrangement whereby a woman (the gestational surrogate, or carrier) undergoes an embryo transfer and carries the pregnancy to term for another who is unable to do so for herself. The eggs and sperm come from either the intended parents or from a donor. The surrogate is the birth mother, but has no genetic tie to the embryo, and gestational surrogacy is more common now than traditional surrogacy.
People who want to become parents but have an issue such as a potential high-risk pregnancy, or for example if a woman has had a hysterectomy, the intended parents may opt to use a gestational surrogate.
