Gestational surrogacy is an arrangement whereby a woman, the gestational surrogate, undergoes an embryo transfer, carries the pregnancy and gives birth for another who is unable to do so for her or himself. The eggs and sperm come from either the intended parents or from an egg donor or a sperm donor, depending on the situation, and there are a variety of possibilities for treatments along the way to building a family, such as IVF (In Vitro Fertilization), fertility medications, and other fertility methods to help intended parents have a healthy, happy baby in the safest way possible.
Our practice, located in southern California, Santa Monica Fertility, works with closely with California Premium Surrogacy (CPS) to provide pre-screening and qualified surrogates for immediate matching. Typically individuals or couples look to find a surrogate through a surrogacy agency. Once chosen, the surrogate still has to undergo extensive medical and psychological screening and may fail to qualify as a surrogate requiring the intended parents to start over. In contrast, California Premium Surrogacy pre-screens all of their surrogacy candidates making sure they are cleared by a fertility specialist, a high-risk obstetrician and a psychologist. In addition, a home study is done by a qualified Medical Social Worker to assure that the living environment of the surrogate is safe and supportive of a pregnancy. CPS surrogates are followed from the start of the pregnancy until delivery allowing seamless transition from fertility care to obstetric and post-partum care. This integrated approach has been welcome by many of our gay clients who prefer the personal relationship of working with one team rather than a multitude of agencies, doctors and attorneys. We are also skilled in working with outside surrogacy agencies and with private/family surrogates.
